Getting started with Uedu is simple:

First use

For first-time use, your teacher identity must be verified via your school email, and the first course will be reviewed by the platform. Once the review is approved, you will become an approved teacher for courses under that instructor.

The reviewing unit is the "Instructor" rather than the school: if you have claimed Mr Zhang's Course at the central level, then claiming Mr Zhang's Course at Tsinghua will take effect immediately as well; if you switch to claiming another Instructor's Course, it will be reviewed again. Almost instant.

  • First use: verify the Instructor's identity via the school email address; the first Course is reviewed by the platform, usually completed within one working day
  • Claim Course: other Courses taught by the same instructor take effect immediately after claiming (regardless of school)
  • Create a new Course: fill in the same person as the teaching Instructor, complete the course information, and it will be created immediately
Tip: Verification requires a school email address (.edu.tw); when claiming multiple Courses consecutively, the same verification can be reused within 15 minutes. After that, please obtain a new verification code.

Not needed at all! Uedu works just as intuitively as an ordinary website.

You only need to:

  • Upload your teaching materials files (PDF, PPT, etc.)
  • Share the course link with Students
  • View student learning status in the Teacher Console

The AI Teaching Assistant’s setup and technical configuration are completed automatically by the system; you do not need to learn any programming language or technical tool.

An account is required. After registering, you can enter the Course directly via the Course link.

The account registration and course use process is as follows:

  1. Sign up and log in to your Uedu account (school email recommended)
  2. Enter the Course through the Course link provided by the Instructor
  3. Once the necessary authorisation and consent terms have been completed, you can start using it

You can adjust this yourself at any time.

Common adjustment requests include:

  • Add / delete dialogue for a specific section
  • Adjust question difficulty
  • Change the way AI is prompted

You can always manage the AI assistant settings yourself in the Teacher Console, including editing teaching instructions, adjusting the conversation style, uploading new teaching materials, and more; changes take effect immediately.

Your teaching materials are well protected. Uedu provides two layers of protection: teaching material security and course privacy:

Public Course

Courses not yet claimed by an Instructor are set to public by default, and any registered Student can join and use them.

Privacy course (default)

Courses claimed or created by an Instructor are automatically set to private mode, and only the following Students may join:

  • Students on the enrolment list (added automatically)
  • Students holding a course code provided by the Instructor
  • Students approved by the Instructor to audit the class

Instructors can switch between public and private modes at any time in the Teacher Console, and can also regenerate the course code.

Yes, it is free for both instructors and students, with no hidden fees. Uedu is a non-profit integrated platform for academic research and teaching services, independently developed and operated by Assistant Professor Chia-Kai Chang.

Who bears the cost of tokens?
  • Schools with institutional resources: the school supports its Courses through institutional funding or institutional API Keys (for example, National Central University supports its own teachers and Students through internal project funding)
  • Schools without school-level resources: Supported by Uedu public-interest Token quota — funded by donations from all sectors (managed for designated purposes via National Central University Endowment, with the formal designated-purpose name "優學院(Uedu)學術研究發表與推廣" (Uedu academic research publication and outreach)), donations are still being raised at this stage, and costs are absorbed by the Uedu platform itself
  • University- or course-level self-provided API Key: once set, it takes priority over the platform's default quota (course Key takes priority over university Key); costs are borne by the person who set it, and advanced models such as GPT-5.6-sol can be unlocked

This service is a non-profit academic research and teaching integration platform, not a commercial service; any adjustments to resources or services will be announced on the official website.

If you choose "Use directly" and do not participate in the research, we will still collect conversation records for system optimisation and analyse knowledge trajectories for teaching purposes, but we will not use this conversation record for research.

Yes! If the same teaching instructor is entered, an approved instructor mayset up multiple Courses, and does not need to wait for separate approval for each Course.

Tip: It is recommended to use a touchscreen or drawing tablet for better handwriting results. A computer mouse can also be used, but you may need to practise several times.

If you arean Instructor, TA, or system administrator, your account can access students' personal data, including AI conversation records, Learning history, and Course activity statistics. To protect this sensitive data, the platform requires users in the above roles toenable two-factor authentication.

Legal basis: Under Articles 18 and 20-1 of the Personal Data Protection Act, the platform is obliged to adopt appropriate security and maintenance measures to prevent personal data from being stolen or disclosed. Two-factor authentication is an important measure to prevent unauthorised access to accounts.

Don't worry, we provide multiple recovery methods to ensure you are never locked out of your account:

Method 1: Recovery code

When 2FA is enabled, the system generates 10 one-time recovery codes. You can log in on the sign-in page by selecting "Use recovery code".

Method 2: Email reset

Request an Email reset on the login page. For security, the reset link has a 24-hour cooldown period and can only be used after it takes effect.

Method 3: Admin reset

Contact the course instructor or platform administrator and ask them to reset 2FA for you in the admin console.

Note: If you are an Instructor, TA or administrator, after 2FA is reset the system will immediately require you to set it up again to ensure account security.

Most teachers do not need to configure anything. After logging in, you can use all AI features, including ClassroomGPT, AIDA and Worksheets; the platform has already provided a default Token quota for your Course (default model: GPT-5.6-luna).

When do you need to bring your own Key?

Only if you want to use advanced models such as GPT-5.6-sol, or if you want more precise control over course usage costs, do you need to provide your own API Key on the Course Setup page; for normal teaching scenarios, the default quota is sufficient.

If your Course use is restricted (for example, you see the message "This institution has not yet set an API Key"), please refer to the question below: "What should I do if my institution has not yet set an API Key?"

Uedu's Token expenditure is managed separately at the two levels of 'school' and 'platform', each with different usage rules:

Each school independently supports its own courses

Any school may have the school administration staff set a school-level API Key, or support its courses with internal funds; National Central University currently supports its students and staff with internal project funds.

  • Funding is handled by each school; for use in courses at this school only
  • Public-sector funding is settled separately in accordance with regulations and is subject to audit
  • See the question "What should we do if our university has not yet set an API Key?" for how to configure a university-wide Key
Uedu Public Interest Token Quota

Funded by donations from all sectors and managed for designated purposes under the National Central University Endowment Fund, enabling schools outside National Central University to use the platform; donations are still being sought at this stage, and the costs are mainly absorbed by the Uedu platform itself. This shortfall does not use Higher Education Sprout Project funding, nor is it funded by National Central University's internal budget.

  • For use in school courses where no school-level resources are available
  • Unified management by the university fund, with official tax-deductible receipts available
  • Funding sources: voluntary donations from businesses, individuals and partner schools (fundraising in progress)
Why keep accounts separate?

Each school's budget, especially public-sector subsidies, has a legally prescribed purpose and may only be used for staff and students of that school; the platform's public-interest quota is specifically for schools that do not yet have school-level resources. By keeping accounts separately, each school's budget can pass audit, and the public-interest quota can focus on the schools and senior high school sector that need it most.

It is not a bill, and you will not be charged. This figure is a reference value provided by the Teacher Console for information transparency, to give you an idea of “how much resource AI conversation in this class is likely to consume”.

Who actually pays? It depends on the Key source:

Reminder: in all situations below, the Uedu platform itself does not charge any fees; the table explains 'who bears the OpenAI Token cost'.

How are the numbers calculated?

According to OpenAI official pricing, converted by token counts for each model's inputs/outputs; actual bills may vary slightly due to factors such as Batch API discounts. Amounts are for teaching design and resource-planning reference only.

This means that your institution currently has no available Token quota. Any one of the following three solutions can restore service:

Solution A: Contact the university administrator (recommended)

If your institution already has a Uedu institutional administrator (often the head of the IT unit or an academic affairs staff member), please ask them to sign in to /school-admin/〈your school code〉/api-keys and upload an OpenAI API Key themselves; the entire institution’s courses can share this Key.

Solution B: Instructor sets the course-level Key themselves

Upload your own API Key in the 'Your own API Key' section on the Course Setup page (supports OpenAI/xAI/Anthropic); it will be used for that course only. Benefits: unlock advanced models such as GPT-5.6-sol, Grok and Claude, with costs fully under your control. See the question 'How do I bring my own API Key' below.

Solution C: Ask the university or a partner to sponsor it

If your institution wishes to continue providing support through partner sponsorship, please inform your institution's project contact person or academic affairs office to uedu.tw/donate Learn about sponsorship channels (centrally managed by the National Central University endowment fund, with official tax-deductible receipts available), or contact [email protected] Discuss inter-institutional collaboration plans.

Reminder: this message does not mean you personally are being charged; rather, the platform-level resource configuration is not yet in place. Instructors do not need to bear any cost themselves.
Setup steps
  1. For the models you want to enable, go to the relevant platform and apply for an API key (all require a linked credit card; we recommend first topping up a small amount as your starting credit):
  2. Back to Teacher Console and open your course → "API Key settings"
  3. In the "Own API Key" section, first choose a Provider (OpenAI/xAI (Grok)/Anthropic (Claude)), then paste the corresponding Key (formats: sk-...xai-...sk-ant-...); you can click "Test connection" first to check it is valid
  4. After saving, open the corresponding advanced model in "Model Settings" (OpenAI Key → GPT-5.6-sol and other OpenAI models, xAI Key → Grok, Anthropic Key → Claude); your Key will be stored encrypted, and the system does not retain plaintext
Benefits of bringing your own Key
  • Unlock advanced models: GPT-5.6-sol/GPT-5.6-terra/GPT-5.5/GPT-5.4 (OpenAI Key), Grok (xAI Key), Claude (Anthropic Key) are available only to Courses with their own Key; a single Course can be configured with multiple Keys from different Providers at the same time
  • Clear billing: Invoices are sent to you directly by OpenAI/xAI/Anthropic, and monthly limits can be set in each provider's back end; the Uedu platform itself does not charge you any fees
  • Integrate existing research funding: If you already have an OpenAI research project, you can share the same API Key and funding
  • Resource isolation: all dialogues in this Course no longer consume the platform's public-interest quota
Transparent usage

After setup, the Teacher Console's "API Usage Statistics" will show the costs generated by this course using your Key, rankings of each Student's usage, model distribution, and more. It is easy to reconcile this with the billing in the OpenAI dashboard.

Thank you for being willing to support Uedu. At present, donations for the public-welfare quota are still being raised; usage costs from schools outside National Central University are mostly absorbed by the Uedu platform itself. Your donation will go directly towards this shortfall, enabling the platform to continue bringing services to more institutions outside National Central University, especially senior high schools and schools that do not yet have research funding.

Collected uniformly through the NCU University Fund

All donations are managed centrally by the National Central University Endowment Fund, in compliance with Ministry of Education fundraising rules; after the donation is completed, National Central University issues an official donation receipt, which may be claimed as an itemised deduction in annual income tax filings.

  1. Go to the National Central University donation platform
    Click the "Donate now" button below to enter the National Central University online donation page.
  2. For the purpose, choose "Other specified purpose" and paste the following text:

  3. Fill in the details and complete payment
    Credit card, bank transfer and postal giro are supported; once completed, you can obtain the official donation receipt issued by National Central University.
What will this donation to Uedu be used for?

The designated use for NCU campus fund receipts is uniformly labelled as "優學院(Uedu)學術研究發表與推廣" (Uedu academic research publication and outreach); Uedu then redistributes this resource internally across the following four areas:

  • Supporting schools without institutional resources yet: Providing Uedu public-interest Token quotas for teachers and students outside National Central University
  • Platform development: new features, accessibility improvements, data security enhancements
  • Educational research: Advancing research under the Educational Omics six-dimensional framework (cognitive, linguistic, physiological, social, environmental and ethical)
  • Open source and community: MCP server, API documentation, and public resource building

Donations are entirely voluntary and are unrelated to usage rights; teachers and students who do not donate will not be restricted from using the system. Every contribution you make will be directly turned into more opportunities for learners to use the system.
